David Smith founded the company in 2004 and is the Managing Director. David is a trained and qualified diesel mechanic and learned the practicalities of operating and maintaining heavy plant on the family farm in the North East of Scotland. By working the farm, David become well versed in all aspects of earth moving, drainage and groundwork’s. He understands the criticality of sound planning and safe equipment operation and job execution. David retains a hands-on familiarity with plant and equipment and is competent in all aspects of civil engineering from earth moving and demolition to construction.
David’s practical experience and understanding of plant has been the keystone of this successful and growing business. He ensures the company has the correct resources; equipment, manpower and materials to perform the work efficiently. He has organised the company to be responsive and flexible to customers’ needs so it consistently delivers on time and within budget. His knowledge and personal dynamism drives the business and provides the leadership that enables his staff to excel.
David demands that total customer satisfaction is achieved by consistently meeting their specific quality requirements. Customer acceptance of the finished product is the prime measure of performance. The standard of work delivered by the David Smith Group is always exceptional; from initial planning to job execution. The work is performed safely and on schedule whilst maintaining a tidy, hazard free and well controlled worksite throughout the operation.
Simon Gilmartin is Contracts Director for David Smith Contractors. As a qualified Civil & Demolition engineer Simon has worked on many major projects throughout Scotland. He is responsible for planning and managing the work and for maintaining customer relationships. He is specifically tasked with delivering the civil engineering contractual workload on the St Fergus and Mossmorran petrochemical sites.
He has considerable experience in the industry in the practical day to day running of civil engineering and of managing operations on petrochemical processing sites. His experience also extends to the organisation and management of integrated contracts and turnkey projects. This requires the effective management and organisation of multi-disciplined workforces to meet project’s schedules, goals and aspirations. His experience of petrochemical plants was gained from contracting in the UK and overseas, most notably at Sullom Voe in the Shetlands and in Egypt. Simon’s commitment to Health & Safety is absolute he is Chartered as well as being a qualified CDM co-ordinator. His knowledge & position allows ownership & demonstrates the companies commitment to the Health & Safety of its workforce.

Our training and development program provides our workforce with structured training in civil engineering techniques and practices in addition to Health and Safety and Quality subjects.
All David Smith Group employees are required to attend these courses.
